Images Changed Outside Crush

Sometimes an image that Crush.pics has already compressed gets changed in Shopify afterwards. It might be re-uploaded, edited in Shopify, or replaced by another app or automation. When this happens, the new file is no longer compressed and the savings are lost.
Crush.pics detects these changes and shows you what’s happened.
Spotting a changed image
Open the image in Crush.pics. If it’s been changed, the Compression panel shows the Current size and a section called Changed since Crush compressed it, with three sizes:
- Original: before Crush.pics compressed it
- Crush: after Crush.pics compressed it, with the date
- Now: the file currently live on Shopify
Recompressing manually
Click Compress in the Compression panel. You can do this at any time.
Automatic recompression
If you have lots of changed images, automatic recompression can take care of them for you.
What it does: Once a day, Crush.pics checks every compressed image for changes made outside the app. Any changed images are compressed again, so your savings don’t silently disappear.
Why it’s off by default: If another app or automation also reacts to file changes, it and Crush.pics could keep re-processing the same image forever. As a safety net, Crush.pics stops after 3 automatic recompressions per image.
How to enable it: Send us a support request. We’ll check your Shopify setup to make sure there won’t be any conflicts, then turn it on for your shop. It’s free and usually done within a day.
Once it’s enabled, the Compression panel shows Auto recompress: Enabled, along with when it last ran and when it will run next. Changed images are recompressed on the next run, or you can click Compress to do it straight away.
If automatic recompression is paused
If an image has been changed and automatically recompressed 3 times, Crush.pics stops recompressing it and shows Auto recompress: Paused.
This usually means another app or automation is reacting to Crush.pics’ upload and changing the image again. You can still click Compress to recompress it manually at any time. If you don’t think anything else is editing the image, contact us and we’ll look into it.
