Setting Up Compression
Last updated April 16, 2026
The compression automation ensures every new image uploaded to your store is automatically optimised — no manual work required.
Enabling Compression Automation
- In Crush.pics, go to Automations > Compression.
- Click Turn on to start.
- Choose your preferred compression preset.
- Click Start Compression in the popup.
That’s it. From this point on, any new image added to your Shopify store will be compressed automatically.
Choosing a Compression Preset
The preset controls the balance between file size reduction and image quality. The options are:
- Conservative – No quality reduction at all; modest file size savings
- Balanced – Recommended for most stores; great savings with no visible quality loss
- Custom – Less failsafes for quality control but higher savings can be forced
See Compression Presets Explained for a detailed breakdown.
Which Images Does the Automation Apply To?
When enabled, the compression automation processes new images uploaded to your store, including product images, collection images, and files uploaded via the Shopify Files section.
See Which Images Get Compressed for a full breakdown of what’s included.
What About Images Already on My Store?
The automation will compress all existing images in the Shopify Files area, and any future images added while the automation is enabled.
Format Support
Crush.pics compresses the following formats:
- JPEG / JPG
- PNG
- WebP
- GIF (static)
Disabling the Automation
To pause or turn off compression automation:
- Go to Automations > Compression.
- Click Turn off to stop.
Any images already compressed will stay compressed — disabling the automation doesn’t restore anything.
